How does this apply to my decorating? In the last post, I shared a few things I did for a client. Her goal was to brighten and open up her space.
Here are some ways to do that for your space. I know it's fall, and you're probably reading lots of blogs about making your space cozy and warm for the up and coming holidays. Some spots in my home need to be brightened and opened up no matter what time of year, so hopefully, you can relate!
- Edit your furnishings - Sometimes you just need less stuff. I like to do this year round. Take a step back. You go out shopping with your garlfrands and come back with a few new gotta haves, and before you know it, your shelves are looking cluttered....
- Use lighter colors - Whether you need a contrast with your darker pieces - if you've got black furniture or dark floors - or you just want to add more layers, a lighter color will lighten your space. So simple!
- Use appropriately scaled pieces - So many times, people use pieces that are too small. You want to fill the void, so you add more small pieces. OR, you're working with what ya got, and all ya got is a large sofa and a gInormous chair. Both of these situations make the room feel stuffy and crowded. Group your smaller accessories together to make them feel like one larger piece. This will free up some empty space. Leave some empty space for a more open feel. If buying new furniture isn't an option, relocate the gInormous chair and swap it for a smaller one that you've got in another room.
